“And then they lived happily ever after.”
I kissed my daughter and turned out the light for the evening. Then it happened. My daughter began to ask the questions any intelligent person would. She asked, “Then what?”
I didn’t understand the question at first. I asked her to explain.
She asked, “Then what mom? Did the princess have a baby? Did she go to college? Does she just marry a prince and that’s it?”
I was shocked and pissed. Shocked that my baby has such insight at six and pissed that she thought of it before me. I really thought about all the Disney Princess stories we implant in our girls’ mind. The fair beautiful young maiden is mistreated by some evil entity, and some dashing young prince comes along and saves her with his kiss and proposal. So I did it. I turned on the light and gave my daughter the realest bedtime story ever.
There once was a girl who was dealing with life as best she could. She dated a few dudes, but nothing special. The girl went to college, got drunk a few times, and maybe kissed a girl. She got a good job when she graduated, but student loans ensured that she wouldn’t enjoy her money as much. The girl met a nice man. He was no prince by a long shot. But this man was just marginally better than the clowns she was used to. So the girl married this man, had some kids, but they later divorced for make believe reasons (saying they realized, due to Facebook, that they can do better is too mean). The girl went on with her life, raised her kids, bought what she needed herself, and lived out the rest of her life on her own terms.
My daughter paused.
She thought.
She asked, “But what if the girl really does meet a prince?”
I smile. “Then, Baby, while she is young and firm, she should go for the King. When he dies, she will rule it all. Now that’s happily ever after.”
